EU will curb import of illegal timber – the proposal is welcomed by DLH

  • 03-11-2008

On the 17th of October, EU proposed a legislation that aims to curb EU’s import of illegal timber. The proposal implies that importers and traders of wood to EU will be obliged to seek sufficient guarantee that their imported wood products are produced according to the relevant laws of the country of origin. This requires such operators to establish “due diligence” control systems to ensure the legality and the origin of wood. The proposal will be submitted to the EU Parliament for discussion.

The reactions from the business community and the NGOs have been mixed, but in DLH we welcome EU’s initiative. It is necessary to curb import of illegal timbers, which deprive producer countries from important income, create uneven conditions on the sales markets and hamper sales of certified timbers like FSC.
